i saw on old school chum this week which was great and i was pleased he was doing so well witha beautiful family....but something he said effected my equilibrium considerably. what could that be i hear you shout! (of course the shouting is dependent upon someone other than myself actually reading this blog post)  he said, "charlie, you do realise we have known each other for 30 years?".  my mind was thinking no don't be ridiculous, we're not that old.  then i thought about the maths and realised he was right!  we are 42 and have known each other since we were 12, the year we started at the  ashcombe school in dorking.  i have to admit that although i do not begrudge being friends with mizzy for a long time, the thought that it is 30 years just isn't sitting that well with me.  it is because of that i have had to look into my heart for a top piece of music from that time, that will help me to reconcile those years.  so this is for my mate misbah aka mizzy aka shamim to us few in the know.  don't read too much into the lyrics!

How Deep Is Your Love - Bee Gees

With a little air of sentimentality i'm adding this video.

It was sad news that another of the great Bee Gee trio has died.  Robin may not have been my favourite Bee Gee (surprisingly that was Maurice Gibb, a genuine guy without the arrogance of Barry), but he was important to their sound.  I love some of the songs that he led too, but more importantly his death has signed the end of any possibility of the Bee Gees performing again.  Although I am too young to be an 'original' Bee Gees fan, I have always regretted not seeing them when I had the chance around the 80's and especially in 1991.  I was too easily swayed off target by my friends and following the cool groups of the day, that mainly no longer exist......this is a tragedy!  (no pun intended.....ok maybe just a small one)  So here is my favourite band singing my favourite ballad.  (used a year later as the first dance at our wedding) Enjoy!

Duran Duran - Ordinary World

I genuinely cannot believe I have not added a song by Duran Duran before now, they are a long standing favourite.  Perhaps subconsciously in an effort to be cool I've stayed away from this sort of pop.  I hope that is not true, that it is merely a temporary insanity on my part.  Ordinary World makes me want to join in and  sing freely, just a fabulous vibe.  For such a melancholy song it makes me feel incredibly upbeat!  Enjoy

This song has got to evoke a reaction from you.  If it's like me then you'll feel elation, then disappointment.  Elated as it brings back good memories and you can't help but still love the catchy chorus.  THEN you watch the video and boy it is really embarrassing, what a state, especially the girl in blue.

XTC - Making Plans for Nigel

How about this one?  If you'd never heard it before would you think it was 30 years old?  Even the video?  Bet for those who remember this song, hearing it again is a blast from the past!!

The Vapors - Turning Japanese

Let me take you back over thirty years to this tune.  What do you think, does it stand the test of time?  Could it play today and still be cool?

Pulp - Common People

Sorry nostalgia has taken over me with this one.  Such a feel good song.  The music makes me smile, the video makes me smile, it just makes me smile.  I dare you to listen again and it not bring a little happiness into your day.  Just looking at Jarvis Cocker is enough to make my life better.  I will post something more contemporary next I promise!

Daft Punk - Around the World

I can't believe I haven't added this tune before now.  The rhythm and beat is spot on.  Yes it's repetitive, but that seems to make it even better.  I have made a number of sound systems cut out because I've had this up too loud.  Daft Punk are as close as we get to a modern day Kraftwerk.   This video is entertaining too, and must have taken a lot of choreography, in fact I did wonder by the jerky movement if they danced to the music at a slower speed, then it was sped up??  Whatever they've done it works for me!

You'll have to excuse me for adding a musical number to my blog, but this is genius and Fred Astaire's dancing and routine in this clip are outstanding!!

JCB Song - Nizlopi

Beautiful song and a great video!  Sit there and let it soak in.  Watch the video closely as it follows the song, especially the dad when he see's the different beasties.  I bought their album a couple of years back which I liked, its raw and not over produced.  I was hoping to see them perform but I think they may have disappeared forever now.

Owl City - Fireflies

This shouldn't be here I know, but I can't help it!  It makes me smile.  Alll I know is after turning this off as rubbish ten times in the past, I caught myself tapping to it on the radio a few days ago.  Since then I'm hooked.  The video is brilliant tho!

The Verve - Lucky Man / Bittersweet Symphony

If there was ever a song I wish I could have written it would be this one.  I love the tone of this too.  I was trying to work out where the video was shot for this.  My best guess is Dubai because of the construction going on in the background.  Thats only a guess mind.



Bittersweet symphony is a fantastic track, with the excellent violins bringing quality and depth to the tune.  Better still is this video, watch it, it's excellent.

Wild West Hero - ELO

With calls from a good friend that 'Mr Blue Sky' has been overplayed over the years.  He says play something just as excellent by ELO but more original.  So here's his recommedation.....and to be honest I can't argue with him, its bloomin excellent.  Sing along!

I'm in the mood for a top draw classic!  Feeling a little flat and this tune is making me feel ooooo-kkkkkk!
You can't but love this track, and the promo video is great to watch even if its only for the hair-do's.  Soak it up!!

Tour de France - Kraftwerk

For some this may be a blast from the past.  This song ticks two of my boxes, one is the Synth/Electro style and two it is one of my favourite nostalgic dance tunes.  I first heard this when watching Breakdance the Movie on video at home (aka Breakin).  This tune had one of the best dance scenes in all the film, with the guy 'Turbo' (that's a street name.....everyone should have a street name) doing the Moonwalk.  (ha ha I do realise how ridiculous I sound) Thing is, this tune is very listen-able, you will enjoy it.

Back to Life - Soul II Soul

Not really had any dancing songs on here yet, and that really is where music starts for me.  Soul II Soul came and went within a couple of years in the 80's, but this track has always been a perfect floor filler for me.

Our Friends Electric - Gary Numan

I have added this video on my 'other ' blog in the past, but I can't ignore that i'm a Gary Numan fan.  I saw his show at Brighton about 6 months ago and his performance of 'Our Friends Electric' was excellent, much heavier than the original, but I love it.  Watch the video and turn it up if your bass can cope.   I was like those guys pointing up to the stage during the woooaaa's.

Just Can't Get Enough - Depeche Mode

I haven't really done any proper 80's music on this blog so far, this is the first.  I was seeing friends last night when Yazoo were mentioned, and its from there that my mind moved onto Depeche Mode.  I love Synth and Electro sound and this was an excellent early song by these guys.  Look at Vince Clarke in the video, he's got 80's hair and seems to be singing, not his normal android self showing no emmotion or life. (like that fella from Sparks)

In the mood - Glen Miller

I love wartime swing music and I can solely lay the blame on that at my fathers door.  With all his sins I must say he has a good sense of rhythm and half-decent taste in music.   I have been to see the modern version of the Glen Miller band when they did a concert at Polesden Lacey in Surrey.  You can't get bored with this music, and from here my appreciation for composers like Gershwin and singers like Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong was awoken.  Turn it up!!!!!

Moving - Supergrass

Supergrass are one of my favourite Britpop bands.  The energy from these guys just works for me, this song is a genuine great.  I could have included a number of other singles like 'Alright' or 'Pumping on your Stereo'.  Would definitely like to see them live if I get the chance.  The new Album is due out soon, and I'm guessing the gigs will follow.  The embedded video I have included is the song only i'm afraid, but that is good as it means less distraction from the music.   If you want to see the full video I will add the link at the end of the post.
